NCAP was founded in 1986 to address the needs of a new and growing epidemic. In its early years, NCAP focused on providing emotional and social support for people at the end stages of their lives while the organization advocated for clients to receive access to appropriate health care. As the disease spread and treatment options developed, NCAP expanded to include a broader geographic area and became an integrated service delivery system.
As the only AIDS service organization in Northern Colorado, NCAP grew to serve eight counties that encompass nearly 16,000 square miles -- an area roughly equivalent in size to West Virginia – with a geographic service area that stretches from the foothills of the Front Range eastward to the open prairie of the six frontier counties neighboring the Colorado/Kansas and the Colorado/Nebraska borders.
Today, the organization’s programs include case management, mental health and substance abuse counseling, a food bank, and legal referrals, in addition to a wide array of prevention outreach, testing, and education programs.
Ryan White funding was first awarded to NCAP in 1990 for medical case management of HIV/AIDS. However, as the disease became much more manageable and transitioned into more of a chronic disease, federal funding began to decrease. To maintain a consistency in the services provided to NCAP clients, the organization underwent a big change.
In October 2011, NCAP merged with three other AIDS Service Organizations (ASOs) across Colorado: Denver Colorado AIDS Project serving the Denver Metropolitan area, Southern Colorado AIDS Project in Colorado Springs and Pueblo, and Western Colorado AIDS Project in Grand Junction. Together these agencies formed the new Colorado Health Network, streamlining funding and increasing the ability to sustain necessary services to meet the evolving needs of those impacted by HIV in Colorado.
In the summer of 2014, Howard Dental Center merged with Colorado Health Network, allowing CHN offices the opportunity to expand oral health care services offered in various parts of the state.
